The Beach as Street: A Snapshot of Calm and Chaos

The course will begin with an exploration of New York City’s beaches within the street photography canon, covering a brief survey of photographers and a discussion of the approaches including specific guidance around photographing intimacy on the beach. Students will also be encouraged to come to the first class with images to share in an open discussion about their experience with street photography. Following that, students and the instructor will meet on location at Coney Island and Rockaway Beach to make photos (exact locations TBD, also Brighton Beach and Jacob Riis to consider). Students will learn about the challenges of beach photography, how to photograph in a hot, chaotic environment, how to think about composition and lighting differently, and how to discover and refine their style in this setting--all while finding their unique voice and vision by the shore. The course will conclude with a final comprehensive critique of the student’s best work.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

This class is for students looking to deepen their street photography during the summer months, with a specific focus on the beaches of NYC. Students are encouraged to get their hands dirty--so to speak---in the sand, sunscreen and waters of NYC's hectic beaches.
