Skill & Vision: Creative Approaches to Non-Fiction Photography (Online)

Course Code: 25MOEPJ208V

Dates: July 12 - August 16, 2025

Meets: Sa from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET

Location: Online Zoom Classroom

Course Tuition: $515

This intensive workshop is designed to develop both documentary skills and personal vision. Together, we will explore the powerful dual role of non-fiction photography—to accurately record reality and to convey the photographer’s own artistic perspective. Through hands-on assignments, group critiques, and in-depth discussions of seminal works by classical and contemporary photographers—including Erica Larsen, Juanita Escobar, Moises Saman, and Susan Meiselas—students will engage with a core question of documentary practice: How do we balance truth with personal creativity?

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
