In this class, students photograph their given or chosen families and examine what it means to represent the people closest to us. We discuss how to visualize familial bonds and how to incorporate both direct and indirect narratives into the work, as well as investigate metaphor, memory and history. We also explore how this relationship might have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began in spring 2020. In-class lectures, readings by Annette Kuhn, Elena Ferrante, Mary Karr, W.G. Sebald, Sharon Olds, and Jorie Graham, and writing assignments will complement weekly critiques. This class is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Open to All Skill Levels: Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes.

Note: All camera formats are welcome.
