This course introduces students to large-format photography, specifically what’s involved in using a 4x5 camera. Participants learn core technical aspects of the device and how it differs from medium-format, 35mm, and digital cameras as they make images with the 4x5 camera incorporating both natural light and strobe. Through in-class photo assignments and weekly solo and group challenges, this course aims to expose students to a slower method of working that will help shape their photographic eye and improve the images they make with any camera. This course is limited to 12 students.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
Students are encouraged to review ICP's Classroom Disclaimer for current information regarding COVID-19 policies, classroom guidelines, and more. These policies are subject to change at anytime.

ICP will provide cameras, film holders, and light meters for this course. If you have your own large format camera, film holders, or light meters feel free to bring them! 4x5 film is the main ingredient for this course, which students will need to provide. Any black-and-white or color negative film will suffice, but some recommendations are: Ilford HP5 (ISO 400, B&W, 25 sheet count) or Kodak Porta 400 (ISO 400, color negative, 10 sheet count). About 20 sheets of film will be needed. Film and prints will not be processed in class; recommendations for photographic labs will be shared during class.
