Students in this course are exposed to various mediums working with portraiture and the figure such as sculpture, painting and photography. The book Glitch Feminism by Legacy Russell is a main source of inspiration and reference as a lead to understanding identity, feminism, the “glitch,” the future and how that can inform how we look at and make images - specifically portraits. Students will push their understanding of portraits by using other mediums such as collage, and painting to engaging with the malleability of photography and the influence of texts to understand what it means to be human in our current climate and how to represent that in their own thoughtful way.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
