This course is for beginners seeking an introduction to both camera handling and basic black-and-white darkroom techniques. Topics include camera operation, principles of exposure, film development, printing, and picture content. Weekly assignments and lectures on historical and contemporary artwork explore the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography. The majority of class time is devoted to working in the darkroom and building printing techniques.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Beginner: No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.
In accordance with ICP's COVID-19 Safety Guidelines and Policies, all Continuing Education students are required to be fully vaccinated and to have received the most recently available booster shots in order to attend onsite courses. This includes courses taking place at the ICP School location (79 Essex Street - entrance at 84 Ludlow Street) as well as offsite locations. Students will be required to provide proof of their vaccination status during the registration process, unless an exemption has been granted. ICP requires masks to be worn while in class, and while in other public areas of ICP, to protect the health and safety of all employees, students, and visitors. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to wear a KN95 and/or KF94 mask at ICP.
Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. In order to comply with ICP's COVID-19 Safety Guidelines and Policies, registration for this course will close two days prior to the start date of the course.
Students attending in-person courses will be required to complete ICP's online Daily Health Screening prior to entering the ICP school.

This class requires a 35mm film camera with manual shutter speed and aperture control. A 50 mm lens is suggested. Bring your camera to the first class and please be sure that your battery is working. In addition to your camera, please bring one roll of 400 speed Ilford HP5 or Kodak Tri-X film, that is 36 exposures, a 3 ring binder with paper and pen/pencil for notes and handouts, and 10-20 photographs that you love. The photographs can be from any source, they can be color, black & white, from books, magazines, the web etc. You should bring prints, not digital files.
