Many of us, as artists, work with material that is deeply personal. Often, the material of our lives is the material of our work. This class explores the boundaries between working as a photographer with deeply personal themes and navigating and honoring the necessity of the private. Students are guided through weekly photography assignments and writing exercises, culminating in the development of a working series. Discussions of student work, in concert with facilitated conversations and close studies of other artists, raise key questions: What can we learn from how it feels to make personal work public? What information does the viewer need to understand the priorities and intention of the work? How do you create a critical distance from your work you are so close to? What and where are the boundaries for you and your practice?

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
