Black and white portraiture eliminates distractions, helping photographers focus on the subject and composition to capture impactful images. In this workshop, students look beyond the natural colorspace to unlock the power of black and white portraiture. This class will take to the streets together in a variety of neighborhoods and settings to seek singular telling moments. Approaching strangers can be intimidating, so students will learn and practice techniques and push beyond the hesitations and anxieties that can get in their way. Students will embrace unforeseen interactions and circumstances – all the while challenging themselves and each other to find that connection and vision that creates worthwhile portraits. This workshop will span over a weekend and then be followed by a remote critique session.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
