Street photography is more than capturing fleeting moments in public space—it is an evolving visual practice rooted in personal perspective, keen observation, and intentional storytelling. Over five intensive sessions, this lecture series guides photographers through the full continuum of street photography: from defining a personal visual language and mastering environmental aesthetics to building long-term projects, editing, and sequencing work for publication and exhibition.

Combining personal case studies, image analysis, interactive group discussion, and photobook studies, this series offers deep insight into both the creative process and the practical execution of a cohesive photographic body of work in the genre of street photography.

Session Breakdown:

Session 1: A Personal Journey Through Street Photography
An exploration of personal practice, background, and creative process.
Through a curated presentation of selected personal projects, this opening session examines the foundational motivations, methodologies, and visual philosophy behind a dedicated street photography practice.

Session 2: Understanding Street Photography: Approaches and Perspectives
Navigating an evolving genre and defining a personal visual voice.
Trace the broad and dynamic landscape of street photography. This session covers diverse approaches within the genre and provides a roadmap for how photographers cultivate an authentic visual language.

Session 3: The Art of Seeing: Composition, Light, and Visual Language
Deconstructing impact, timing, and gesture.
An interactive analysis of select street photographs to dissect why certain images resonate. Through group discussion, examine composition, light, decisive timing, gesture, and emotional resonance to sharpen your visual awareness.

Session 4: From Images to a Body of Work: Developing Long-Term Projects
Sustained engagement, research, and project execution.
Discover how single images evolve into sustained, meaningful bodies of work. Using the speaker's photobook By the Mekong as an in-depth case study, this lecture explores project ideation, research, deep immersion, editing, and thematic vision.

Session 5: Editing, Sequencing, and Building a Photographic Narrative
Transforming individual frames into compelling visual stories.
Learn the mechanics of narrative sequencing and editing for photobooks, exhibitions, and digital presentations. This final session includes an analysis of influential photography books to illustrate how sequencing shapes meaning and impact.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
