In an era of rapidly rising production costs, how can artists take control of their work and self-publish on their own terms? This course explores the artist book not merely as a container for images, but as an expressive, independent medium in its own right.
Through readings, archival research, field trips, and group discussions, students will explore the legacy of the printed page and expand their definition of what a "book" can be—far beyond a simple paper sandwich. We will analyze sequencing, editing, material choices, and conceptual framing across artists' books from both within and outside the photography world. Alongside weekly conceptual assignments, this course features a hands-on partnership with the Center for Book Arts. Students will receive specialized instruction in physical bookbinding and structural techniques, culminating in the creation and production of their own fully realized artist book.Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
