Retracing Berenice Abbott's New York

Working from Berenice Abbott's iconic project Changing New York (1935-39), participants in this course photograph multiple sites at the specific locations Abbott depicted in the 1930s, studying through their own cameras how the cityscape has changed-or stayed the same. Students then share their images at ICP in two critique classes. Examples of Abbott's work, as well as instruction in how to best photograph architecture and the cityscape, are included in each class.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
