This course is part of a dynamic series of lecture seminars that examine the history of photography from multiple critical perspectives. In this class, we investigate the evolution of the photographic portrait—how the camera has been used to construct, question, and reimagine identity, representation, and visibility. Students will trace the portrait’s transformation from itinerant daguerreotype studios of the 19th century to contemporary practices in self-portraiture, digital media, and social platforms, considering both artistic and cultural contexts. Through lectures, visual analysis, and discussion, students investigate the shifting power dynamics between photographer and subject, the role of technology in shaping representation, and the ways photographic portraiture challenges and redefines personal and collective narratives. Optional short research assignments encourage students to connect historical inquiry with contemporary practice, promoting reflective analysis and critical thinking. By the end of the course, students develop a deeper understanding of how photographic portraiture continues to shape our understanding of ourselves and of one another.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
