Can artists—who are taught to make—treat unmaking as an equally useful form of artistic practice? In this online course, we will explore collage as a medium for unmaking and remaking the image. Using various technical methods, we will cut up old pictures and stitch them back together in unexpected ways, reorganizing archival imagery into arrangements that speak to the present moment. Our toolbox will include methods of deconstruction, decomposition, disruption, intervention, rearrangement, redaction, and revision. Each week will offer opportunities to learn new skills including digital collage, 2D design, and collage animation, while critiques will offer space for conversation around new and in-progress work. The course will culminate in an online presentation of projects shared with family and friends.

Need-based scholarships are available for all Teen Academy classes. To apply, please visit: https://www.icp.org/content/teen-academy-registration.
Note: Even if a course indicates it's full on this page, we may have designated scholarship seats available and encourage students to apply.

Course Level/Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.

Note: Students will need access to a computer or laptop to run Adobe Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop (which will be provided by ICP). Students are welcome to use a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or digital point and shoot camera to complete assignments, but are welcome to use archival/found images for their work, as well.

Program Description: ICP’s Teen Academy program welcomes teenagers ages 14–19 from across the country and around the world to develop their skills as leaders and visual storytellers in a range of in-person and online classes. All curricula are youth-centered and include: photographic and writing assignments, open lab time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a guest artist visit, a field trip, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.
