Join us in New York City’s Lower East Side for a weeklong journey of art making, field trips, and design, exploring the vast culture of photobooks. In this in-person summer program for young people ages 14-19, participants will dig into making artist zines from concept development to a final printed book.Students will combine their own photography with experimental, hands-on techniques such as image transfers, collage, and mixed-media interventions. These one-of-a-kind artworks will be digitized and incorporated into thoughtfully designed layouts. Along the way, participants will build essential digital design skills and gain a deeper understanding of sequencing, storytelling, and book structure. Through field trips and guest artist visits, students will connect with book artists, designers, publishers, and retailers working in the photobook world today. This class will also offer participants access to ICP’s library collection of more than 40,000 photobooks and an upcoming summer exhibition celebrating the photobook as an art form. This program is ideal for advanced beginners to intermediate photography students who are eager to expand their creative practice and explore new ways of presenting their work.
