Course Code: 26MOEPO008IBDates: August 8, 2026

Street photography looks and feels very different against the backdrop of the ocean. Students interested in street photography will notice immediately how the natural environment and change of scenery from NYC’s sidewalks impacts human behavior and what this means for their street photographs. NY’s beaches are a vibrant, chaotic, and sometimes sensual urban escape, and students will explore the many themes of summer that play out at the beach. Students will learn how to shoot in a hot, chaotic environment, how to think about subject matter, composition and lighting differently, and how to discover and refine their style in this setting, all while finding their unique voice and vision by the shore. The class will conclude with a final comprehensive critique of the student’s best work.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
