Surrealism at Play: Experimental Darkroom Techniques

Dare to experiment in the darkroom through the lens of Surrealist photography. Each session introduces hands-on techniques, such as montage, double exposure, solarization, and photograms, encouraging playful exploration and risk-taking in the printmaking process. Through guided discussions, readings, and creative assignments, participants gain an understanding of Surrealism's impact on photographic history while developing their own visual languages. We also examine how artists have pushed boundaries around gender, perception, consciousness, and reality, using the darkroom as a site of experimentation and transformation. Weekly prompts, critiques, and instructor feedback support the development of a more intentional approach to imagemaking and printing.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
