This workshop at Mana centers on the layered and often overlooked histories of NYC’s Garment District, a neighborhood shaped by migration, labor, fashion, and industrial change. Participants engage with archival materials, textiles, imagery, and ephemera to explore how the area evolved from a manufacturing hub powered by immigrant garment workers into a symbolic and economic center of American fashion. Through guided discussions, hands-on examination of collected materials, and place-based inquiry, the workshop delves into themes of labor, identity, class, and cultural production. Students learn strategies for researching, organizing, and interpreting collections while developing critical frameworks for working with material culture.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
