Family Workshop Series: Storytelling Through DIY Publishing

Course Code: 26MMGBP000I

Dates: July 18-19, 2026

Meets: Sa and Su from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM ET

Location: ICP (84 Ludlow Street)

Baseline Tuition: $250

In this hands-on workshop, participants of all ages collaborate to create personal zines—small self-published booklets that blend photography, text, drawing, and collage into a finished handmade publication. Families, friends, and chosen families are encouraged to enroll together,* making this a rare opportunity to work side by side across generations while sharing stories, memories, and creative ideas.

We begin with a brief introduction to the history and culture of zines as tools for self-expression and community storytelling, and then we move into how zines are made. Through guided prompts and demonstrations, participants learn simple layout techniques, sequencing, and DIY binding methods, everything needed to bring an idea to life on the page. Participants go on to experiment with a range of hands-on techniques and tools to bring their pages to life in unexpected ways! Bringing the world of self-publishing to life beyond the studio, the workshop culminates with a visit to ICP’s Photobooks USA 2000–25 exhibition.

Each participant leaves with their own original, handmade zine and copies to share, plus a digital version of their completed publication, which is sent to them following the workshop.

*Note: Each registration counts for two participants; you and ONE guest. Participants aged 8 years or older are welcome in this workshop.
