In Western art, the aesthetic aim of the historical portrait was to render a likeness as true to life as possible, and the materials used-as well as the resulting composition-were also expected to reflect tradition. Over time, however, technological innovations, artistic and conceptual shifts, and artists pushing the limits of materials, aesthetics, and the very ontology of portraiture, have changed the genre. This course explores some of the ongoing debates in portraiture, including the ensuing issues with representation, through readings, discussions, lectures, and creative photographic projects.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
