Take your lighting beyond the studio and learn to create high-end, polished imagery in any environment. This intensive weekend workshop offers a practical approach to mastering portable off-camera flash on location. Designed for photographers looking to move past available light, this course teaches you how to quickly analyze ambient light, balance off-camera flash, and build flexible, reliable lighting setups in unpredictable real-world conditions.
Through live demonstrations, field exercises, and instructor-led practice sessions, you will learn to work with speed and confidence—turning challenging locations into dynamic visual backdrops using lightweight, professional speedlights and portable strobes.
What You Will Learn:
Location Lighting Fundamentals: Balancing ambient light with off-camera flash for seamless, natural, or dramatic effects.
Building Portable Rigs: Choosing, setting up, and triggering speedlights, battery-powered strobes, and lightweight modifiers.
Adaptable Strategies: Designing flexible, 1- to 2-light setups that adapt to shifting real-world conditions and tight schedules.
On-Set Problem Solving: Managing harsh sunlight, mixed color temperatures, and tight spatial constraints outside the studio.
Prerequisites: Comfortable operating a DSLR or mirrorless camera in manual mode and a basic understanding of camera exposure mechanics.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
