Join Freshkills Photographer-in-Residence and ICP faculty member Jade Doskow for a rare opportunity to engage with the transformation of this former landfill-turned-park site. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is nearly three times the size of Central Park and is the largest park to be developed in New York City in more than a century. Once the world’s largest landfill before closing in 2001, the site has since been engineered with layers of soil and infrastructure and is now evolving into a vital space for wildlife, recreation, science, education, and art. Access to the interior of the park is limited to scheduled programs, making this a unique opportunity for early exploration and learning. In Session One, students will meet on-site at Freshkills to photograph at sundown, guided by Doskow’s insights into both the ecological and cultural significance of the landscape. In Session Two, the group will reconvene via Zoom for a critique session, where participants will share their Freshkills work and take part in a closing discussion on the history of the park’s transformation, as well as current considerations in contemporary landscape photography.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
