Street photography ranges in style from candid imagery to orchestrated portraiture. In this course designed for teens of all levels, students will learn the basics of digital imagemaking while photographing what inspires them on the streets around ICP, in their neighborhoods, and the city at large. Inspired by ICP's fall exhibition, Everybody, Everywhere: Images from the Street curated by Isolde Brielmaier, students will learn about the history and evolution of street photography, exploring the images and approaches of the exhibiting photographers from around the world. Students will learn practical issues about photographing in public including how to gain trust and access needed to photograph people and places in and around New York City. The curriculum includes: digital lab time, visual presentations, photographic and writing assignments, discussion, critiques, a guest artist visit and a field trip. The course culminates in a final presentation for family and friends.

Need-based scholarships are available for all Teen Academy classes. To apply, please visit: https://www.icp.org/school/teen-academy.

Course Level/Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.

Note: This class will be held in-person. Students will need access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or a digital point and shoot camera in order to complete assignments. If they do not have their own device, there are a limited number of DSLR cameras that can be signed out from ICP. Please reach out to Teen Academy staff at teen_academy@icp.edu after registering if you would like to sign out a camera for the duration of the course.
