Land and Place: How Environments Shape Photography and Experience

This course explores how land and place impact one’s history, experience, and upbringing—and how that can translate into images. Students learn about artists, such as Ana Mendieta, Dionne Lee, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and others, who create environmental portraits, video work, land art, and social documentary photographs to examine these themes. Through art exhibitions, assignments, and class discourse, participants gain a robust understanding of how to fuse land and place into their own photography and art-making practices. This course is limited to 12 students.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
