Can, or perhaps should, a photograph act as a proxy for truth, feeling, or connection? Since its inception, photography has been critical in shaping personal and collective memory. Whether in the form of historical documentation or a family archive of photographs, we look to images to provide historical context as well as emotional meaning. Through in-class lectures, creative photographic assignments and critiques, students examine both physical and emotional qualities of photographs and consider the possibilities and limitations of what they might have to offer. This course is limited to 12 students.
Prerequisite: Open to All Skill Levels: Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes.
Note: For the provided assignments students will be expected to make new work as well as to re-contextualize existing photographic work, which can be in the form of a family archive, public domain historical photos, or found pictures. All camera formats are welcome.
