Teen Academy - Bilingual Photo I in B&W (English & Spanish)

This two-week, in-person photography intensive invites students of all backgrounds to learn the basics of black-and-white film processing and darkroom printing in a bilingual, Spanish- and English-speaking environment. Students will expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of photography: they will learn how to photograph with a 35mm film camera, process film, and make darkroom prints from their own negatives. Students will discuss the work of historical and contemporary photographers with an emphasis on Latino/@/x artists working in the photography world and spend time developing their own project over the course of the two weeks. This intensive will include photographic assignments, darkroom time, visual presentations, and discussions, and will culminate in a final presentation of student work for friends and family.

Note on language levels: We ask that students have a minimum advanced beginner level fluency in both English and Spanish. Intermediate, Advanced, Native, and Non-Native Speakers of both languages are all welcome.

Course Level/Prerequisite: This class is open to all photographic skill levels but for language, we are looking for people who are at least advanced beginners in both English and Spanish.

Note: Students will need access to a manual focus SLR film camera in order to complete assignments. If they do not have their own device, a camera can be signed out from ICP. Program Description: ICP’s Teen Academy program welcomes teenagers ages 14–19 from across the country and around the world to develop their skills as leaders and visual storytellers in a range of in-person and online classes. All curricula are youth-centered and include: photographic and writing assignments, open lab time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a guest artist visit, a field trip, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.
