Part of a dynamic series of lecture seminars examining the history of photography from multiple critical perspectives, this class investigates the evolution of the photographic portrait, including how the camera has been used to construct, question, and reimagine identity, representation, and visibility. Students trace the portrait's transformation from its origins in 19th-century itinerant daguerreotype studios to contemporary self-portraiture, digital media, and social platforms. Through lectures, visual analyses, and discussions, we examine the shifting power dynamics between photographer and subject, the role of technology in shaping representation, and the ways photographic portraiture challenges and redefines both personal and collective narratives.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
