Alternative processes, photographs made by hand-coating artist's papers with light sensitive emulsion, have been in use since the 19th century and are widely used today by contemporary artists and photographers. This course offers students a chance to "step outside the box" creatively from other print processes and learn about the expressive and painterly aspects of alternative photographic methods; each print is unique. In addition, the use of digital negatives offers the best of both worlds, combining modern-day technology with handmade historic printing methods. Class lectures, demonstrations, and lab time will focus on specific topics: digital negatives, cyanotypes plus toning, van dyke brown, palladium, and layering color gum bichromate pigments. Students are welcome to explore and experiment with the processes and make them fully their own.

Note: Familiarity with Photoshop is required for this course, particularly an understanding of Adjustment Layers.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Students are encouraged to review ICP's Classroom Disclaimer for current information regarding COVID-19 policies, classroom guidelines, and more. These policies are subject to change at anytime.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
