Teen Academy - The Archive: A Personal Study

In this introductory level digital photography course, students will learn the basic principles of imagemaking, from composing to editing and sequencing a final body of work. Students will also begin to research their own personal histories, using family photographs to uncover these stories. Through photographic assignments surrounding the idea of the archive, students will expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of image-making and collage-making. Students will also write about their work and develop an artist statement to correlate with their final project. All classes culminate with a presentation of photographic projects and writings shared with family and friends.

ICP’s Teen Academy program welcomes teenagers ages 14–19 from across the country and around the world to develop their skills as leaders and visual storytellers in a range of online classes. All curricula is youth-centered and includes: photographic and writing assignments, digital open lab time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a virtual field trip, a guest artist visit, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.

Note: In order to participate, students will need access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or digital point-and-shoot camera to complete assignments. Students receiving a scholarship will be provided with access to the necessary software to complete the course.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

Anthoula Lelekidis

Anthoula Lelekidis is a first-generation Greek-American lens-based artist who utilizes photography, photographic collage, and mixed media in her practice. Her work navigates themes of personal memory, loss, and migration. With a deep interest in the archive, she alters found family photos to interpret a deeper tie to her heritage and uncover ancestral roots within blank spaces of her recollection. This investigation and the need for an individualized story, act as a meditation between the realm of post-memory and realization.

She holds a BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design and received the Community Fellowship from the International Center of Photography. She was a resident at the Skopelos Foundation of the Arts. In 2008, she earned a scholarship from the Students On Ice Organization to travel to photograph Antarctica. Lelekidis is currently based in Queens, NY.
