The power of a portrait can be an effective way to create a documentary narrative. This class helps students formulate a concise story line and examine approaches to collaborative/environmental portraiture which will best support their overarching narrative. We discuss methods of how to prepare for the shoot and identify potential collaborators, which includes individuals and organizations; strategies for conducting interviews; how to identify locations and equipment for the project; how to best work with natural light on location and how to react to unforeseen circumstances that might impact the project. While motivations for this class may range from social activism and community building to personal expression, this class helps all students begin to create a portfolio of environmental portraits that strongly conveys their perspective and point of view. This course is limited to 10 students.
Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

Think of a story you want to document through your portraiture. Be prepared to share your project idea along with 5-10 images with the class as a way of introducing yourself and your photographic practice. Alternatively, you may show examples of other imagery that relates to a narrative/event/story you want to make work about during this course. A reading assignment will be sent to you a week before class.
