Collaborative approaches, creative uses of new media and deep dives into the vernacular archive represent efforts by contemporary documentary photographers to push beyond some of the tropes that have characterized Concerned Photography for decades. This course encourages students to move their own projects in new directions and through lively discussions around some of the most innovative documentary photography projects being made today. From seminal works by Susan Meiselas, Jim Goldberg and Luc Delahaye to projects by Tim Hetherington, Broomberg & Chanarin, Sim Chi Yin, Poulomi Basu, Tanya Habjouqa, Zun Lee, Donald Weber, Raymond Thompson Jr. and others, this course compares and contrasts approaches, ethical considerations, and issues surrounding representation that emerge from more conceptual modes of working. A Guest Speaker will join the class for one session.

Note: All camera formats welcome.

Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
