This course provides an in-depth exploration of the technical and aesthetic components of lighting. Students will be introduced to metering and exposure while studying natural and artificial lighting techniques for portraiture and still life photography. Through technical exercises, students will learn the tools needed to control and manipulate light in order to achieve both practical and artistic effects. Students photograph themselves, each other, family members, strangers, and objects — spontaneously in the neighborhood, staged at home, and more formally in the studio. The curriculum includes: studio time, media lab time, visual presentations, photographic and writing assignments, discussions, critiques, a guest artist visit, and a field trip. By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of prints and an artist’s statement. The course will culminate in a final presentation for family and friends.
Need-based scholarships are available for all Teen Academy classes. To apply, please visit: https://www.icp.org/school/teen-academy.
Course Level/Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.
Note: Students must have access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or digital point and shoot camera to complete assignments. If they do not have their own device, a camera can be signed out from ICP. Please reach out to Teen Academy staff at [email protected] after registering if you would like to sign out a camera for the duration of the course.
