Street Photography: Stage and Spectacle

The streets of New York present photographers with poignant visual materials at the intersection of objective and subjective realities and our expectations. Students in this course explore some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods—Chinatown, the Lower East Side, Times Square, DUMBO, Harlem, the East Village—as they discuss and investigate their visual and narrative potential. After examining key players in the history of street photography, participants work in a variety of styles and approaches, such as documentary, “Street,” portraiture, fashion, and conceptual. We rotate between photographing on-location and meeting at ICP for critique, discussion, and acquiring new skills.This class explores some of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods: Chinatown, LES, Times Square, DUMBO, Harlem, East and West Villages, etc. Together, we will discuss and investigate their visual and narrative potential, from quiet, semi-private moments to the intensity of urban life. Students will be introduced to key players in the history of street photography and are encouraged to work in a variety of styles and approaches, i.e. documentary, “Street”, portraiture, fashion, and conceptual, while personalized “homework” will encourage further exploration. Class meetings will rotate between photographing on-location and at ICP for critique, discussion, and acquiring new skills, such as flash, night exposure, models, etc.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
