The streets of New York are imbued with traces of LGBTQIA+ history, even though they have also been contested sites for gender nonconformity. In this workshop, participants retrace the queer geographies of working-class emigrant histories in Jackson Heights, arguably the city’s most culturally diverse borough. From pre-Stonewall cabarets to late 1990s mainstays that remain open to the public, this workshop revives a queer constellation flickering in and out of public cognition. As a group, participants are encouraged to engage creatively and directly in a safe space with these histories, as they develop poetic approaches inspired by the spaces we visit.

Note: Participants are expected to bring their own cameras (a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or mobile phone).

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
