Landscape Photography: Poetics and Possibilities (Online)

In this landscape photography course, we will focus on thinking about the scenes we are witnessing as metaphors for our personal and psychological experiences. Instead of documenting the objects of the landscape as facts, we are exploring their potential for symbolic and poetic meaning. Be they urban, rural, or wilderness, landscapes are rich with metaphorical information that is ripe for our interpretation and use. This course will include readings, project statement writing, student presentations on photographer’s work, critique and discussion. Each student will complete a body of work by the end of the 10-week course. This course is limited to 12 students.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with your photographic practice. You have already produced or are working on a body of work. You are proficient in Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, et cetera. You understand printing or portfolio revision processes. You may be seeking ways to strengthen your work through sequencing, theoretical readings, and group critiques.
