Walking in the Footsteps of the New York School: The History and Practice of Street Photography

Arbus, Avedon, Bey, Brodovitch, Cowans, Croner, Davidson, DeCarava, Donaghy, Faurer, Frank, Grossman, Higgins, Klein, Leiter, Levinstein, Levitt, Model, Powell, Shabazz, Smith, Vestal, Weegee, and their followers: the New York School has had a profound impact on every photographer of urban environment. This class offers short presentations of photographic history (1839-2024) to inform and inspire our explorations of the city's most vibrant and iconic neighborhoods. Then, we head out to seek narratives of our own. Students may photograph in a variety of styles, from documentary to conceptual. Supplemental presentations cover flash, night exposure, model releases, "working" the street, and more. This course is limited to 12 students.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
