Self-portraiture offers a sense of immense control. It also forces you to open up a very private part of yourself to your audience. The genre thus exemplifies the tension between the artist's power and fragility. Self-portraiture can be about narcissism, where you put yourself in the center of everything. Or, it can be about ego, or even "voice," where you restore or build a sense of self. Participants in this class study the complexities of how to create a coherent body of self-portraits. We also look at the work of Francesca Woodman, Nan Goldin, and others.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
