Project Fashion Shoot

Good fashion photography involves the merger of portraiture, style, and mise-en-scène with the proper utilization of light. Students in this course study portraiture and light as they experiment with concept and style. A designer provides the wardrobe, and we work as a team to develop the art direction, lighting design, styling, sets, and other key elements of production. The class also includes lectures on historical and contemporary topics in fashion photography and an introduction to narrative themes, as well as student critiques and collaborative exercises. This course is limited to 12 students.

Note: Students should have experience with essential lighting techniques, including continuous and strobe lighting equipment and light modifiers.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
