Reconsidering Representation: The LGBTQ+ Voice in Photography Past and Present

Course Code: 23SCEPV328

Dates: February 28 - May 9, 2023

Meets: Tu from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM ET

Location: ICP (84 Ludlow Street)

Course Tuition: $830

This course provides an overview of the history of LGBTQ+ art and photography as well as current and contemporary themes and narratives. Students consider why this voice is often silenced and how LGBTQ+ artists navigate making work and representation under such circumstances. We discuss underrepresented LGBTQ+ histories, voices, and modes of photographic approaches, from the early nineteenth century, to the Gay Liberation movement, to today. Film viewings, assigned readings, and exhibition visits provide context to LGBTQ+ approaches to art. Each participant completes a final project inspired by their own artistic voice within a newly learned historical and contemporary framework.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
