Teach Me to Leave Dreams Alone

Course Code: 23SCEPV327

Dates: February 4 - April 1, 2023

Meets: Sa from 10:00 AM to 12 N

Location: Online Zoom Classroom

Course Tuition: $440

Inspired by the last line from Audre Lorde's poem, "Change," this course examines writers, filmmakers, and poets in order to help students better understand how to create a photographic body of work. We use free-association writing, dream journaling, and field recording to tap into the unconscious and determine why we make the images we do. We also practice deep listening to our dreams and ideas, with the goal of delving deeper not only into our work, but also our relationship to imagemaking, the history of photography, and ourselves. Students undertake writing exercises, participate in critiques, and view technical photographic demos.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
