Images are everywhere, but how do you tell a story through your photographs? This one-week intensive digital photography class introduces teens of all levels to the basic principles of digital image-making, from composing to exploring the effects of light. Through photographic assignments whether venturing throughout NYC or staying closer to home, students expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of digital capture and output on the subject matter of their choice. Through writing exercises, different techniques will be presented for using words with images. Critiques led by faculty and guest artists will foster confidence in storytelling, as students discuss their work and reflect upon their progress. By the end of the course, students will have developed a series of images with accompanying text that tell their summertime stories!
Need-based scholarships are available for all Teen Academy classes. To apply, please visit: https://www.icp.org/school/teen-academy.
Course Level/Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.
Note: This class will be held in-person. Students will need access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or a digital point and shoot camera in order to complete assignments. If they do not have their own device, there are a limited number of DSLR cameras that can be signed out from ICP. Please reach out to Teen Academy staff at teen_academy@icp.edu after registering if you would like to sign out a camera for the duration of the course.
