Inanimate Objects as Portraiture

Through a collection of inanimate objects arranged in a unique composition, students will create portraitures that represent their individual personalities. Inspired by the Dutch Golden Age still-life paintings, this course will take a contemporary approach to still-life portraiture. Students will combine found objects and personal items into one frame that tells a story about who they are. This course will help students understand how to create an image through inanimate objects that tell a narrative, feeling, or moment about themselves and their peers. We will explore and examine still-life photographs and paintings throughout the course while creating our own.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
