In Focus: The Still Life (Online)

This course explores the field and function of still life photography. We cover its historical and conceptual development, and then study a wide range of artists, including Edward Weston, Johanna Breiding, Laura Letinsky, Irving Penn, Leslie Hewitt, Willa Nasatir, Lucas Blalock, and others engaging still life photography as we make our own still life images. Weekly exercises guide students through various approaches to still life photography, challenging them to examine and express their relationship to the objects around them.

Note: Digital SLR or Mirrorless Camera, Smartphone Camera are all suitable camera formats for this course.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

On the first day we will do brief introductions. Please prepare a 5 minute presentation of your work. Additionally, please bring 3 objects that you would like to place in a Still Life and be prepared to share the significance of the objects with the class.
