In My Room: A Study and Practice of Self-Portraiture in Photography (Online)

In this course, we examine the practice of self-portraiture as if it were a room. A space. A container. What are the makings of it? What can be made of it? What does it hold outside of our physical bodies? Such questions lay the groundwork for challenging the traditions of photographic self-portraiture. We think about performance, still life photography, conceptual photography, and documentary. We also explore our relationship to interior space—our rooms—literally, metaphorically, or both. These elements help us to create self-portraits that move within and outside of the realm of the common definition of a photographic self-portrait.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
