The camera is a powerful observer of people. In this course, we examine what it means to make images that address the social, cultural, or emotional space of people and the places they inhabit. Participants discuss strategies for photographing people within a cultural context, and create documentary essays. Through class critiques and the honing of editorial skills, students gain a deeper understanding of their personal motivation and desire, and create meaningful work about the world through their lens.

Note: DSLR or Mirrorless or analog cameras are suitable for this class.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Students are encouraged to review ICP's Classroom Disclaimer for current information regarding COVID-19 policies, classroom guidelines, and more. These policies are subject to change at anytime.

Please prepare and be ready to show 15 images of past work for the first class. This can be a specific series of images or a group of pictures that you feel represents your best work. Please bring this selection in print form (if you have them printed) or as a specific file of jpegs. We will not be looking at websites.

This course has a pre-class assignment. Photograph a specific place of your choice. This can be a home, a business, a specific public space, or any other area that has a specific boundary. Think about what 'place' means in a photograph. There is no right or wrong to how you shoot this, so have fun. The pre assignment can be a selection of 20 images that you print as cheapo prints (4x6 machine prints) or prepared in a specific file of jpegs.
