How do we grapple with making aesthetically beautiful photographs of subjects and topics that are not always easy to look at? How can we view imagery, let alone make imagery that may attract and repulse at the same time? This feeling cuts across all media disciplines, but especially photography and its ability to document events, whether found or staged. This class will look at the history of image-making both in still and moving pictures that have produced imagery of this nature. Subjects include early and contemporary wartime photographs, documentation of medical conditions, the spectrum of sexual behavior, and environmental devastation. Students will examine and make photographs that can seduce with aesthetics while presenting seemingly contrary content. Further development of student work in a critique-style setting will round out the class.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
