Featuring fine art papers, hand-applied archival emulsions, and simple techniques, historic photographic processes present compelling alternatives to both traditional silver methods and modern digital prints. In this hands-on course, students produce enlarged digital negatives that can be used for contact printing in various processes. Participants work in the digital lab to create new enlarged negatives from original film negatives or slides, prints, and/or digital files, and then print these negatives in the traditional wet darkroom to create unique handmade prints.
Prerequisite: Photoshop I or portfolio review

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate Photoshop: You are familiar with the use of Photoshop. You understand working with layers, camera raw conversion, and color and tonal adjustments. You may be interested in developing experience with local adjustments, blending modes and more advanced tonal and color adjustment techniques.

For the first day of class you will need to bring in a notebook and something to transport your digital files to and from class, for example a Macintosh compatible portable hard drive, a USB flash drive, or a DVD. You should also bring in a selection of digital files, preferably RAW files, in color or black and white. Students are also welcome to bring in original black and white or color film negatives (4x5 or larger film negatives are ideal for contact printing and 35mm and medium format are acceptable for scanning, color negatives will need to be converted to black and white for printing). You should bring in 8.5" by 11" clear acetate sleeves to protect enlarged negatives, which can be purchased at an office supply store.

In preparation for this class it is recommended that you review the use of Adjustment Layers and Masks in Photoshop and look at Dan Burkholder's website at: www.danburkholder.com; take particular note of his digital negative section. For this class, students are required to purchase fine-art paper of their choice for printing. It is not required or recommended to bring paper to the first class as paper selection will be discussed as the course progresses. All other printing materials are supplied.
