In the language of photojournalism, we constantly refer to “the story.” Indeed, photographers often call themselves “visual story-tellers.” Yet it is not always clear how to define and tell "the story." In the digital era, the range of possible narrative approaches has expanded, leading to new challenges and opportunities. As documentary photography confronts a historic lack of diversity in our practice, the question of who tells the stories is a major concern. Through class discussion, looking closely at relevant work and assignments, this workshop helps students to find their narrative voice and define the stories they want to tell. This course is limited to 12 students.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

If you have an ongoing project, or work you wish to show the group, shortly before the course starts you will receive the instructor's email, where you may send a link or a folder of pictures.
