In this workshop we closely study and engage in critical conversations around selected photographs by classical and contemporary masters, including MartÍn Chambi, Susan Meiselas, Gilles Peress, as well as examples drawn from the participants’ own work. We consider the emotional, factual, symbolic, psychological, and ethical meaning of these photographic examples with an emphasis on articulating the specific ways that photographs function and our responses to them. By looking closely, we are able to strengthen the critical and perceptual skills involved in both our understanding and how we make new work.
Prerequisite: Open to All Skill Levels: Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes.
Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
