This online course focuses on various forms of landscape photography: the exterior natural world, interior scenes from one’s home or personal environment, constructed imagery and the social landscape. Through assignments and in-class critiques, students create a portfolio of new work which reflects the history, technique and aesthetics of contemporary landscape photography. We use the work of Vivian Maier, Jennifer McClure, Stephen Shore, Bryan Fromhals and Isaiah Robert Winters as inspiration. Two guest speakers will join the class for one session. This course is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Note: It is recommended that students have Adobe Photoshop for this course.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

For the first day of class, students should be prepared to share their sources and influences and to describe where you find your ideas and motivation. Are there sources outside of photography such as music, books, poetry, life experiences, or cultural experiences that you look to for inspiration? Time will be limited to give minutes to share this topic with the class. Students should also be comfortable with Zoom and practice sharing their screen while in an online meeting.
