This one-day workshop offers a close look at the work of Japanese women photographers across seven decades, led by Pauline Vermare, co-curator of the exhibition I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now. Drawing on the exhibition's reconsideration of Japanese photographic history through the work of more than twenty-five intergenerational artists, participants will engage closely with photographs, installations, photobooks, and printed matter that capture the everyday experiences and shifting roles of women in Japan, from quiet, delicate observations to blunt, boundary-pushing statements. Through guided, sustained looking and group discussion, participants will explore the historical, social, and formal contexts that shape this body of work. Each participant will receive a copy of the accompanying publication (Aperture, 2024), which expands on the exhibition through critical essays, historical material, and a comprehensive bibliography of photobooks made by Japanese women. Led by one of the exhibition's own curators, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to spend focused time with these images in conversation with the person who helped shape their presentation.
